The Kataklysmos water-based festival celebrates the island’s connection with the sea and the water, and its held 50 days after Greek Orthodox Easter. A program of entertainment, water-related sporting activities and competitions and a traditional fair take place along the Molos promenade. While the festival marks the religious date of Pentacost (celebrating the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples Jesus after his Ascension), it is also linked to the biblical flood of Noah’s Ark and pagan waterfront festivals that were held in honour of the goddess Aphrodite in ancient times.
